Historic timber frame restoration, and change of use from farm animals to Japanese themed residence.
This unusual project started with an 1880’s timber frame barn on a field stone foundation. The original secret basement was used to make alcohol and hide a still during prohibition times. The timer frame was rotted and broken in sections, and the entire frame was in danger of collapse after a severe hurricane in the 1980’s. The frame was repaired and straightened with the inclusion of a new second floor mezzanine.
The client wanted a simple Japanese themed farmhouse like residence with traditional shoji doors tatami mats, rock garden and third floor Zen meditation skylit space. Some of the unique features include a cupola clad three-story atrium and 24 x 40 ft gathering space with stone faced fireplace wall. |
