Timber Frame Restoration

Go Back

Historic timber frame restoration, and change of use from farm animals to Japanese themed residence.

This unusual project started with an 1880’s timber frame barn on a field stone foundation. The original secret basement was used to make alcohol and hide a still during prohibition times. The timer frame was rotted and broken in sections, and the entire frame was in danger of collapse after a severe hurricane in the 1980’s. The frame was repaired and straightened with the inclusion of a new second floor mezzanine.

The client wanted a simple Japanese themed farmhouse like residence with traditional shoji doors tatami mats, rock garden and third floor Zen meditation skylit space. Some of the unique features include a cupola clad three-story atrium and 24 x 40 ft gathering space with stone faced fireplace wall.
